COLO 2099 Moulton Pond (Dedham)
Two young Common Loons are currently in our care at Avian Haven. The chick on the left was found all alone on Hancock Pond, after an adult loon was found dead. The whereabouts of the other adult and second chick were unknown. The young loon arrived here on July 24 and had no other loons for company until August 12, when another chick arrived from Moulton Pond. The Moulton Pond chick (on the right) was found hiding in reeds at the edge of the pond, apparently lost and believed to have an injured wing. We found no injuries, but the loon was thin and somewhat debilitated.
The Moulton Pond chick is quite a bit more mature than the one from Hancock Pond, and for the first day after the second chick arrived, the two youngsters stayed in separate pools in the Pool Hall. But the following day, we decided to try them together in the outdoor loon pond. After a period of getting acquainted with the pond as well as each other, they settled down together and seemed to quickly become friends. Later that same day, one of their caretakers observed the older chick diving for a fish, then offering it to the younger chick, who accepted it from the older bird’s beak!
